Outing to Lake Lenice
All photos by Ralph Randall The Place Sage isn't all that grows in the desert.
Some of the best bug hatches in the country are going to erupt in April
at the awesome desert lakes near Vantage. Hot fish, lots of action! The
desert
lakes chain near Vantage is the ultimate draw for world-class
fly-fishing
in early spring in this state. Lenice, Nunnally and Merry Lakes nestle
on
the north side of the Saddle Mountain range where big trout grow fast.
I've
caught them up to 24 inches. They average 14" to 18". The Fish Selective fishing regulations are in
effect with a one fish limit, no minimum size. Most anglers release
everything. The lake was stocked this year per allotment plan. Lenice
was stocked with Rainbow Fingerlings, Brown Trout catchables and Tiger
Trout (Brown/Brook) catchables. Nunnally received Rainbows, Browns, and
Tiger Trout. Allotments in recent years have been slightly reduced (~75
fish/acre rather than ~100 fish/acre) for both waters in an attempt to
grow larger fish. Also in this regard, the Triploids are expected
to live longer and contribute some larger fish to the fishery. I expect
angling to be as good this year as last, with the hope that some of the
Triploids stocked in 2006 will have survived to 2007 and contribute
some real monsters to the fishery. ![]() Flies The favorite starter patterns early in the spring are mostly streamers, such as buggers and leach patterns. Count on chironomids and callibaetis followed by an awesome damsel hatch. Nine-foot, 4x leader fished with 4- to 6-weight tackle is my suggestion. Camping The club will set up a camping area in or near the parking lot on Lake Lenice. There are also camping areas at Nunnally. For those who choose to stay in a motel, there are small motels at Vantage and Desert Aire. A KOL campground is also available at Vantage for those who need full hook-ups. The campsites at the lakes are primitive so bring the proper equipment. The weather can be cold, hot, wet, or all of the above within minutes, so be prepared for anything. If you are interested in joining the group and have not already let me know, please call or e-mail me so I can get a head count. It is important that we get an idea of the number who will attend so that we can plan for our Saturday evening meal. The club will provide the main dish, with members bringing side dish (salad, chips, dip, etc.) or wine to share with all. Contact To contact the outing fishmaster, Denny Way, see the club calendar.
